In this episode, I talk about my summer, my business, my podcast, my personal life (husband, kids, etc.), and then end with an update on what I’m listening to, reading, watching, and playing.

Highlights from this episode
We kicked off summer with a vacation over Memorial Day weekend. We went to:
-
- Silver Lake Sand Dunes on the west side of Michigan. We rode ATV’s and dune buggies.
- Mackinac Island in Lake Huron. We enjoyed the bike trails and the slower pace of life.
- Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park in northern Michigan. We hiked, drove along the lakeshore, and saw Top Gun Maverick in nearby Traverse City, MI (IMAX Theater!)
- Frankenmuth, MI – We at at the Bavarian Inn, and it made me miss my sister Kelly.
This fall, we will do a lot of fun fall stuff, like a trip to Cedar Point for Halloweekends, visiting local corn mazes, going on hay rides, visiting apple orchards and pumpkin patches, going to local festivals, etc. It all starts at the end of September! I LOVE fall!
Update on The Pharmacist’s Voice ®, LLC
I’ve had a lot of unexpected and exciting opportunities come up! I originally started The Pharmacist’s Voice because I wanted to narrate pharmacy continuing education into audio format. When I couldn’t find clients, I pivoted to audiobooks, eLearning, voiceover jobs, podcasting, and other projects. I’m happy with where I’ve landed, and more opportunities keep coming my way. It’s exciting! FYI, I don’t work in traditional clinical pharmacy practice at all. What I do is in the “gig economy.”
I also recently started consulting (or mentoring) a pharmacist author who wants to narrate her own audiobook. I’m also mentoring a pharmacist who wants to start a podcast.
I just got back from the Medipreneurs Summit, which was August 26-28 (2022) in Cincinnati, OH.
If you’re a pharmacist who realizes that healthcare is changing and you have some creative new ideas to introduce to the world of healthcare you should go to the next Medipreneurs Summit or join the Medipreneurs Membership Program, which has monthly mentorship opportunities. If you come to the Medipreneurs Summit in Cincinnati in 2023, I’ll be there!
One of the highlights of this year’s Summit was walking with Asha Bohannon, PharmD at 5:15 AM on Saturday!
My favorite sessions were Kelley Carlstrom’s “Design around your genius…” and Michael Davis’s session on storytelling.
I spent time with several of my podcast guests too. Here’s a list: Sue Paul, DeLon Canterbury, Dr. Bruce Berger, Michelle Fritsch, Kimber Boothe, Kelley Carlstrom, Lauren Castle, Janan Sarwar, Anna Garrett, Dan Krinsky, and Asha Bohannon. Good to see you all! I also got to meet Angela Orr, RPh, who will be on the podcast December 9.
I’m creating a new online course this summer. It’s called A Behind-the-Scenes Look at The Pharmacist’s Voice ® Podcast. Here’s the premise:
Many pharmacists put, “Start a Podcast” on their to-do list. Until you decide if you’re going to do it or not, it’s a distraction. I help you decide if you want to start a podcast or not by showing you behind-the-scenes of my podcast. Along the way I ask you critical thinking questions that will help you decide what your podcast will look like if you decide to start one. And, if you decide, “It’s not for me,” I assure you that you have not failed at starting a podcast, you have finally make a decision! Celebrate! You just saved yourself lots of time and money. If podcasting were cheap and easy, everyone would do it! By the end of the course, if you want to start a podcast, you will have a worksheet with all the details you need to start your podcast. I will also point you in the right direction for starting your podcast…But teaching you how to start your podcast is not the intention of the course. You need to find the right coach for you. I will be mentoring or coaching a few students coming up, but my availability is limited, and my students must take the online course before I will work with them. More on that in a future episode.
If you’re interested in getting on the waiting list for my new online course, send me a message through the contact form on my website, www.thepharmacistsvoice.com.
I am just about to start Tim Tippett’s Audition Ready Online Course. It will help me level-up my audio engineering skills. In anticipation of taking the course, I’m remodeling my recording space. More on that in my Fall 2022 update in November!
Adding new services to a business is not something I take lightly, but I’m creating a mic check service for my business. $25 for 15 minutes via Zoom. $50 if you want the recorded Zoom session sent via Drop-Box to you. If it only takes us 10 minutes to set up your mic, I’ll help you with mic positioning and technique for the other 5 minutes. If you need advice on which microphone to buy for podcasting, pod-guesting, or online meetings, we can also meet about that.
After almost 5 years of being in business, I got rid of my business phone number. It’s been two months. No regrets so far!
Update on my podcast
The podcast is doing great! Thank you for listening! I just finished my 10-part Back-to-School Series, which features interviews with 9 pharmacists who teach online. It was a big success. I want to do it again in 2023! Thank you to all my guests: Dr. Beju Shah, Dr. Blair Thielemier, Dr. Jimmy Pruitt, Dr. Asha Bohannon, Dr. Adam Martin, Dr. Kelley Carlstrom, Dr. Stu Beatty, and Dr. Ashley Walker. (I was the 9th interview…thanks Dr. Alex Barker for interviewing me!)
My 2022 podcast production schedule is full, and 2023 is starting to fill up. Thank you to all my past and future guests!
I will continue my pronunciation series (where I share drug name pronunciations and tips for pronouncing drug names). I also will continue my quarterly updates (fall, winter, spring, summer). The next one will be in November 2022. I will also try to continue to alternate solo shows and interview shows.
List of upcoming guests
-
- Sept: Simone Sloan, RPh (a DEI Consultant) and Dr. Alex Barker, Founder of The Happy PharmD.
- October: Dr. Melody Hartzler, PharmD (Functional and Integrative Medicine) and Dr. Brian Bisher (Wellness and Mindset Coach who helps working dads finally feel comfortable in their own skin)
- November: Two Federal Pharmacists (that’s your clue…I didn’t give the names)
- December : Angela Orr, RPh will talk about “Being in the moment for the holidays” and heart math, and Dr. Nandita Koodie will be on the podcast right before Christmas. She specializes in Faith-Centered Remote Pharmacy Practice.
Good things are coming yet in 2022!
Family news
We did a lot of local things throughout the summer after our trip to Michigan. Some the highlights are hiking, biking, kayaking, fireworks with family, family gatherings, family pictures with my husband’s family in July, growing a garden, visiting the local Farmers Market, going to ice cream shops, swimming at the local pool, helping with the church’s annual rummage sale, reading books, watching movies (Top Gun Maverick, among others), and going to Toastmaster’s meetings (Club 3159 “Westgate Toastmasters”).
My husband (Nathan) is doing well. He’s been at a new job for 9 months; he’s maintaining his >30 pound weight loss; and he’s looking forward to his 4 fantasy football drafts this weekend.
Our son Kraig is a “Super Senior.” He did not graduate with his same-age peers, so he gets a special title. Kraig has autism. His focus at school is on self-help and work skills. Kraig loves hanging out with family. He has responsibilities around the house like any other teenager, but leisure time is his favorite. Kraig loved our vacation at the start of summer, and he worked really hard during his 8-week summer school program.
Both of my boys started school on August 18.
Our younger son (Derrick) is 17. He’s a senior in high school. He had a blast this summer hanging out with friends, working as a baseball umpire, doing some weight lifting at a local gym, conditioning for his fall sport, which is cross country, and dating his girlfriend, Sydney.
Derrick went on a mission trip to Kentucky with a friend’s church and worked with youth at a summer program. He also served as a Camp Counselor for our school district’s 6th grade camp, which was the second week of school.
Derrick is working on applying to The University of Cincinnati’s College of Engineering. He wants to be a construction manager. If he ends up at the University of Cincinnati, he’ll be on campus while I’m in town for the Medipreneurs Summit.
What am I listening to?
- I recently finished The 5 AM Club: Own Your Morning. Elevate Your Life by Robin Sharma.
- I also listened to Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens this summer.
- Currently listening to Story Brand by Donald Miller…for the 4th time! (Not in a row!)
What am I reading?
I’m reading American Royals by Katharine McGee with my son Kraig, but I don’t think he likes it.
What am I watching?
- I just finished the show 30 Rock with my husband.
- Now, we are watching Seinfeld.
- The next movie we are looking forward to seeing is “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.” Daniel Radcliffe plays Al Yankovic, and it looks hilarious!
What am I playing?
- Settlers of Catan (Board Game)
- Ticket to Ride Japan (Board Game)
- Ticket to Ride on my iPad. The Swiss map is my current favorite.
I had a great summer, but I’m ready for fall. We will go to the Fulton County Fair (a local county fair) on Labor Day (Monday, Sept 5, 2022). We will eat junk food (like fresh, homemade donuts), visit the animals, and see the sights. I hope you have an excellent Labor Day weekend too. Enjoy your last little bit of summer!
Thank you for listening to episode 175 of The Pharmacist’s Voice ® Podcast!
